RACHELL BO CLARK – arist in residence, Oktober to December 2015

Rachell Bo Clark is a Berlin based Australian dancer and choreographer. Her work investigates contemporary concepts of humanity, shifting in between iconism, identity, ritual, shame, and pop culture.

Rachell’s artistic practice has developed from a desire to understand the functionality of the body and the world around it. Striving to break habitual patterns of the body she has begun developing qualities that generate specific ways of moving, and that express the diverse textures and capabilities of the body.

“Throughout my stay at State of the Art I imagine creating a series of task-based score, which will be repeated and practiced as ‘instant compositions’.  The practice will form the basis of my new work, ‘Kill Your Hero’s’ (working title).  This work will playfully bring my improvisation practice into a performative setting.  The work will splice together different situations to create snapshots into imagined worlds.”

Rachell is an active performer and creator.  She recently performed in Alexandra Pirici’s work ‘Fluids’ as part of the 2015 Berlin Art week and in June performed at the Venice Biennale in Alessandro Sciarroni work, ‘Turing THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE.

Rachell, in collaboration with Alice Heyward, present her first full-length work ‘Ship’ at Ada studio Berlin (July 2015).

In March 2015 Rachell made a duet relating to her interest and research into pop, icons and the imagined. ‘By Me Stand’ was performed at several performance events in Berlin.

BRIGITTE NICOLE GRICE – arist in residence, July to September 2015

Brigitte Nicole Grice is an artist, writer, poet and Marxist. She is presently eine frau at Büro Desurrealismus at STATE OF THE ART, where she will be playing host, mad woman, and mistress.

While in residence, in addition to running the Büro Desurrealismus, she will be finishing and releasing a philosophical and ethical text entitled “Contempt (Unfinished)” on the implications of contemporary conditions of capitalism that looks at the role of self-knowledge, eros, poetics and the arts in close context to Karl Marx’s 1844 Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts, Theodor Adorno’s work on the Culture Industry and a notion of Eros and a question of the Aesthetic Dimension as provided by Herbert Marcuse. Further, while in residence and residing in the Büro, she will be writing an appendix text around the role of surrealism that stands as a more evolved theoretical consideration of what could be considered (De)surrealismus today within a growing globalized neoliberal age. Additionally, she will be working on an experimental film and an exhibition that will be revealed at State of the Art in the end of September.

Brigitte was birthed in a tale of Hollywood lies typically know as Los Angeles, she has worked in various fields of the arts, has a degree in Journalism from Boston University and attended the California Institute of the Arts receiving an MA in Aesthetics and Politics, where she worked in the Art School before deciding she had to sail away from the American mother ship. She will be relocating to Hamburg come October 2015 where she will again take on the loyal staff as student at HFBK Hamburg leaning more and more towards film but against any operation of genres or disciplines to categorize or pinhole who she is or what she does; such are never definable.

MARCO FRANCO DI DOMENICO – arist in residence, Jan 2015

Based in Los Angeles, writer and performance artist Marco Franco Di Domenico made his mark in LA’s experimental literary scene with Enter>text, a “living literary journal”. Founded by Marco and his congenial partner Henry Hoke in 2011, Enter>text has hosted an ongoing series of events in different locations (such as art spaces and private residences), featuring young and upcoming writers and performers.

“22nd Century Realty” is a fictive Real Estate/Healer office with which Marco transfers the immersive, participatory approach he has been developing through Enter>text to a solo project he specifically conceived for State of the Art. The hot topic of gentrification is elaborated on by setting up a mystic triangle between the three cities of Berlin, Los Angeles and Detroit – and by fusing it with intrinsically Californian forms of new age esotericism. Taking on the fictional persona of a spiritual healer/real estate consultant, Marco invites the audience to sign up for personal appointments. It’s only in this intimate format, that the secret literary dimension of his performance unfolds.
